South Stack Lighthouse

South Stack Lighthouse on the island of Anglesey, North Wales was built in 1809 and is now, like all UK lighthouses, fully automated. The lighthouse is reached by descending 400 stone steps from the cliff tops then crossing a steel bridge to the island. In strong winds you really get a sense of how bleak this place is. I have been here when the waves have been crashing in and it was literally impossible to stand on the steps. A truly incredible place.
