Magpie Mine - The Wheel

Magpie Mine near Sheldon in the Peak District National Park is a long abandoned lead mine. This photograph, or more accurately photographs, is of the replica winding gear. This image was created by stacking approximately 180 30 seconds exposures of the nights sky. As the Earth turns we get the effect of the stars seeming to rotate about the sky. This photograph captures that movement. By stacking them together we get these extended trails, each being made up of 180 pinpricks of light. Magpie Mine is an eerie place at night, with the sounds of sheep, foxes and badgers as they move around in the complete darkness. This is made especially bad if you happen to have read some of the history of the mine, with mentions of ancient murders and hauntings.
